Customer Service
Today, I decided to venture out to our electronic retailers (Best Buy [BB], and Circuit City [CC]), to attempt to locate a generic, linux compatible, PCI Network card to place in a system which is being shipped to a clients office in Las Vegas. Sounds like a tough task?I first went to BB, just because of its proximity to my offices, and after parking on the last row of available parking (which was also the last row of parking), I went in and went straight to the networking section of their computer department. I had to check about three times, but they, in fact, had NO PCI network cards. None. They did, however, have a spot for one. I pulled the price tag, and set about to find a representative. I walked down each isle in the computer section, and not only did I not find one who was busy, I didn't find one at all.
So, I decided to camp out by the cash register they had back there, and proceeded to count reps who walked by. Three. Not one asked why I was standing there with a price tag. About five minutes went by, and a rep inquired what I was doing there. I pointed at the tag, and said "Do you have any more?" He said, "No." I said "How about in the back?" He said, "I'll go check."
It was at this point that another customer walked up to him, with another rep in-tow, and inquired about a $1500 computer, but wanted to upgrade it with another $400 19" LCD monitor. My price tag for the $24.99 network card was promptly set down, and the customer with both reps, disappeared. I calmly counted to about 30, and the rep did not magically reappear, so I headed out the door.
I drove about a block, over to the CC in town, and walked in -- headed straight for the back where they keep their networking equipment. On my way, I smiled, said hello, and inquired about every reps that I saw. Not one of them even smiled back. Nothing was said in response. But, that's ok. It's Sunday, they're busy. [Is that a valid excuse?]
I grabbed the networking card right off the shelf, and headed back to the front to cash out. Two registers were open. Neither had a rep behind the counter. So, I placed my item on the counter and waited. Three minutes ticked by, and no one showed up. How are people supposed to pay for things in this store?
I grabbed up the merchandise and headed back to the computer department and asked them to ring me up back there. He pointed back towards the font, and seemed very shocked that there was no one up there. However, he did happily ring up my $14.99 network card, and made sure I didn't need anything else. I grabbed my bag, and headed out the door, between the security pillars. Which went off, I might add. No one stopped to look at my bag, and I didn't slow down. Maybe next time, I'll try it with a DLP or Projection TV.
Anyone wonder why shopping online is more fulfilling?
